About the author Juliet Cooper

I have always enjoyed writing; however it was after retiring from a busy
life of farming and raising a family that I was inspired to put ‘pen to paper’.

After farming in the Awatere Valley we moved to Golden Bay for 5yrs,
where the seed was sown for Paddy’s Big Catch, for my third story
about white baiting.

We then moved to Granity on the West Coast. Lo and behold it was here at, the
little old cottage with the red roof and the green door that a family of
penguins lived under our floor. Hence my first book came to life. 

I had the script initially completed when unfortunately, I had a flight
to Christchurch Public Hospital with a health event. At this point I put my
Penguin story on the back burner. 

Then one day my sister phoned, saying ‘get your story to Mike Howell’. My
sister Debbie operates an ear health clinic, as Mike had his
treatment he informed her that he illustrates environmental children’s
stories. 

As they say, the rest is history.

I was so surprised when Mike loved my story. That was the beginning -
Serendipity, call it what you may, my prayers were answered. 

Penguins under the Floor was launched at Granity School, the children loved
having a story set in their very own very little town.  

We then moved to Rakaia Huts to be closer to family and health facilities. 

On returning to Canterbury, I was inspired to write Mr. Whiskers, my second
book, about my childhood memories about the swagger man who passed by
our family farm in Hurunui, Nth. Canterbury during the 1950’s. 

This was firmly embedded in my mind, and it wasn’t long before it was on the
drawing board. 

Every night when the images rolled in from Mike the artist, I was so amazed
and excited to see the story unfolding.

This has been one of Mike’s favourite stories. 

Paddy’s big catch is right now at the same stage, again my husband and I
watch with anticipation as the images come to us. 

This has been a wonderful journey. 

Physically my health is improving, and my mind is enthused about
sharing stories from our journey through life, for others
to enjoy.
